On RN Breakfast, Sally Sara spoke with Andrew Collins about technology as the new frontier of domestic violence: how the phones and everyday technology central to daily life are turned against victim-survivors, why more accessible AI is making that abuse cheaper, easier and harder to detect, and the Centre's work with services in Australia and overseas to help victim-survivors identify and escape it.
Andrew Collins spoke to Mamamia for its coercive control series on what technology-facilitated abuse actually looks like after separation. It is rarely the hacking people imagine: it runs on ordinary consumer technology (shared accounts, Find My, vehicle apps and wearables) set up while the relationship was good and never given up.
A scoping review of IS literature from 2010 to 2025 uncovered only a handful of relevant publications on technology-facilitated domestic and family abuse, a striking disciplinary neglect in a field uniquely positioned to help. ANROWS data makes the stakes plain: one in two Australian adults report victimisation, one in four admit perpetration. This panel paper, combining perspectives from academia, law, and protective security, argues for an IS research agenda that confronts technology's dual capacity to empower and to harm, putting the experiences of vulnerable people at its centre.
